Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka and India's seventh largest city, with over 12 million inhabitants. Bengaluru, its official name since November 2006, is a melting pot of different ethnicities and cultures. Situated at an altitude of 920 m, the capital enjoys a moderate, pleasant climate. Summers are mild (April-June) and winters cool (February-October). This garden city - albeit a polluted one! - has well-ordered parks, long avenues of flowering trees and a pleasant climate. While it has become the country's high-tech capital, it has retained a typically Indian charm. The best way to visit is on a tour organized by the KSTDC. Although Bangalore's origins go back a long way, the present-day city was founded in the 16th century, and has remained an important administrative center ever since. Its rapid industrial growth has earned it the nickname of India's Silicon Valley. There's always something going on: music, dance performances (Western and Indian), theater, exhibitions, carnivals..
