Situated between the Chapora and Arondem rivers, Goa's northernmost district is one of the country's least-visited regions. Its coastline is dotted with long sandy beaches, lagoons and coconut plantations. North of Arambol, the area around Fort Tiracol, on the Maharashtra border, offers a pleasant change of scene after days on the beach. The small town of Pernem, with its pretty Portuguese colonial houses, its Igreja de São José church built in 1852, and its picturesque little streets, can also offer the opportunity for a half-day escapade. Buses to Mapusa stop here.
