According to a legend from the Skanda Pûrana, Parsurama shot an arrow to mark the boundary where Samudra, the Indian Neptune, was to retreat. Defeated, Samudra retreated when the arrow fell at Bannali(bann : arrow, ali : village). And this is where the village of Bannali got its name, later distorted by the Portuguese to Benaulim. The long beaches of Benaulim and Colva are around 6 km from Margao, and enjoy a relaxed, family atmosphere. Don't expect to find much nightlife here! The beaches of Mobor and Cavelossim are about ten kilometers south of Benaulim.
