This small village north of Goa lays claim to being one of the oldest hippie capitals on the planet - along with Kathmandu, Bali and Ibiza. The village, near Arpora, is quiet. Two-wheeled tours are particularly pleasant, with superb scenery and several ancient Portuguese churches. On the coast, the atmosphere is more festive. Every Wednesday is the day of the flea market. In the 1970s, this was the place where broke hippies sold their gear before heading home. Today, the flea market has changed character. Nowadays, the flea market's character has changed, with clothes, bangles and decorative items all on sale in a festive atmosphere. Anjuna is also known for its open-air full-moon parties, where a variety of electronic music is played at high volume (including the famous "Trance Goa" music born here in the late 1980s). Organized for and by young European tourists, these parties attract thousands of people from all over the world. From April to September, the resort closes almost completely, returning to its former calm. Only a few guesthouses continue to welcome passing tourists.
