population: 38,000. Altitude: 750 m. Chamba is an ancient principality founded in 920 by Raja Sahil Varman. Away from the tourist circuit, the town will enchant travelers in search of authenticity. The tourist office, located on Court Road, can prove useful: it provides information on the town and surrounding area, as well as leaflets (activities, visits, etc.). Founded in 1908, the Bhuri Singh Museum (Chowgan Mohalla, near Nehru Park; admission Rs. 100) is an interesting little museum. It houses a fine collection of miniatures from the region (Chamba, Kangra and Basohli) as well as wood carvings and weapons.
