Dharamsala lies at an altitude of 1,385 m. The Tibetan government is housed a little further north, in Gangchen Kyishong. When travellers say they want to go to Dharamsala, they are actually going to McLeod Ganj, nicknamed Upper Dharamsala, which is 10 km from Dharamsala by road. The capital of Tibetans in exile since 1959, when China invaded Tibet, McLeod Ganj is also the home town of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. At the start of their exodus, the Tibetans first chose Dalhousie, before settling on McLeod Ganj. Situated at an average altitude of 2,080 m, the town owes its name to David McLeod, the Scottish Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab in 1800. It's a lively, colorful city. The surrounding area is sumptuous and offers many beautiful walks.
