Shimla had its heyday in the 19th century, when the British chose the city as their summer capital to escape the heat of Calcutta, 1,850 km away. They moved most of the administrative services, including men and archives, by train. Shimla is a pleasant city where it is good to stroll, an ideal stopover on the road to the summits. We advise you to take the Toy Train from Kalka to get there, the line winds through the mountains and offers breathtaking scenery. Short Toy Train rides are also available from Shimla.
