In the mid-18th century, Baba Ala Singh laid the foundations of the Patiala fort known as Qila Mubarak, around which the present-day city is built. It later became the capital of an independent Sikh state. Symbols of this people's union: its bazaar, its gurdwaras, its spectacular fort and its authentic maharaja's palace, the Moti Bagh Palace.
