Amritsar, whose name means "basin of nectar", in reference to the basin surrounding the Golden Temple, is the Mecca of the Sikhs. It is also the second most populous city in Punjab, 24 km from Pakistan. Amritsar was founded in 1574 by Ram Das, the4th Sikh Guru, around a sacred lake: the Amrit Sarovar (meaning: basin of the nectar of immortality). The sumptuous Golden Temple for which the city is famous dates back to 1601. After its destruction in 1761 by the Afghan chieftain Ahmad Shah Durrani, it was covered with gilded copper plates. It's an absolute marvel! Amritsar is a good base from which to witness the Indo-Pakistan border closing ceremony, a spectacle that takes place to the cheers of the crowd. Several mosques and temples are also worth a visit. The city center has been renovated and is a delight to stroll around.
