Kurukshetra is the cradle of the universe according to Hindu mythology. It was here that Brahma is said to have uttered the words of wisdom (or Bhagavad Gītā) before engaging in the eighteen-day battle of the Mahābhārata. The city owes its name to the Aryan king Kuru, ancestor of the Kauravas and their cousins, the Pandava. According to legend, on the eve of the battle, Sri Krishna (incarnation of Vishnu) managed to convince Arjuna, the Pandava chief, who was reluctant to give battle to his parents. His sermon, the Bhagavad Gītā, deals with darma: a moral principle according to which every being must perform his duty selflessly, regardless of possible victories or defeats. Spending a weekend here is an opportunity to visit several temples and rub shoulders with sadhus and pilgrims who come to bathe in the sacred pools.
