A pleasant climatic resort, Mussoorie is mainly visited by Indian tourists in search of coolness and tranquillity. Consequently, those seeking peace and quiet should avoid Mussoorie during vacation and monsoon periods (April to September). What's more, at this time of year, as in many cities in northern India, prices soar - and are multiplied by two or three.Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Mussoorie is also known as the "Queen of the Mountains". In colonial times, this small climatic resort was reserved for the British, who sent their children here to study. Many boarding schools remain from this period, and are still very popular with wealthy Indian and Nepalese families. The city center is made up of two districts: Gandhi Chowk (or Library Bazaar) and the livelier Kulri Bazaar. They are linked by the long main street, The Mall, which offers fine views over the Doon Valley. It vies with Shimla for the title of India's most exclusive health resort, minus the glitz and glamour.
