Rishikesh is usually the starting point for pilgrimages to the sources of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. The town owes its name to the asceticism of the sage Raibhya, who convinced God to become incarnate before him in the form of Hrishikesh (literally: "the hair of Rishi"). Surrounded on three sides by the Shivalik Mountains, the site stretches along the Ganges and features a populous, polluted and noisy city center (around Triveni Ghat) of little interest to tourists. In fact, it's around the two long suspension bridges of the upper town, Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula, that the tourist zone is located. The city was made famous by the Beatles' visit in 1968. At George Harrison's suggestion, they came to Rishikesh to recharge their batteries by taking part in a transcendental meditation course. This publicity put Rishikesh on the world map of spirituality. Today, spiritual centers abound, some of them serious and dedicated to transmitting ancient knowledge that has been skilfully codified. Other activities have also developed in Rishikesh, such as rafting, which takes place from October to May. Rishikesh may be a popular tourist destination, but it's no less welcoming. As in Haridwar, holidaymakers and tourists flock here during the pilgrimage period (May-October).
