The town lies at the point where the sacred Ganges River flows out of the Himalayas onto the Indian plain, a place predestined for fervor and spiritual quest. Haridwar is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism, where a multitude of pilgrims and sadhus come to bathe in a canal where the waters of the sacred river Ganges flow, with ascetic exercises and offerings. If you're afraid of crowds, avoid Haridwar between May and July. During this period of vacations and pilgrimages, the city is overrun by Indians from all over India. In fact, unlike its neighbor Rishikesh, the city is frequented mainly by Indian tourists, not Westerners, giving it a special spiritual strength and authenticity.
