30,000 inhabitants. 53 km east of Gorakhpur. Kushinagar is one of the four holy places of Buddhism. It is here that Buddha pronounced his last words and died at the age of 80 years. His disciples took it upon themselves to carry his relics to various places in India and Southeast Asia. The Parinirvana temple marks the place where Buddha passed away. It houses a 6.10 meter long statue of the reclining Buddha attaining Nirvana dating back to the5th century. The Rhamabar Stupa marks the place where he was cremated.
