The history of Madhya Pradesh's capital dates back to the 8thcentury , when the Rajput ruler Suraj Sen was cured of leprosy by water from a pond given to him by the hermit Gwalipa. In gratitude, he named the new city after him. Over the centuries, Gwalior and its fort passed under the control of the Rajputs, Mughals, Marathas (with the Scindias) and English, who finally returned the latter dynasty to the throne. The thousand-year-old citadel is perched 100 m above sea level on a plateau overlooking the region. Over the centuries, the heart of the city has descended into the suburbs, and today the new town of Lashkar, a few kilometers to the south, has become the seat of economic activity. Gwalior boasts a number of treasures that are well worth a night's stay. First of all, the fort and its splendid Man Singh palace, still adorned with glazed tiles, its temples and the rock-cut Jain sculptures of Gopachal. Then comes the Jai Vilas Mahal, the Maharajas' palace of absolute excess. If you have a little time left, why not stroll through the Muslim bazaar of Lashkar, which has retained its authentic atmosphere.
