At 9 kilometers north of Agra, Sikandra would be only a city without interest if it did not shelter the mausoleum of the emperor Akbar. It is perhaps, after the Taj Mahal, the most interesting monument in Agra. Contrary to tradition, Akbar had the construction of his mausoleum undertaken during his lifetime. He died before it was completed and his son Jahangir did not finish it until late, in 1613. The architecture lovers will be able to note the evolution of the style which announces, like the Baby-Taj, the future mausoleum of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz, the Taj Mahal. Akbar's mausoleum is inspired by the tomb of Humayun, his father buried in Delhi.
