population: 67,783. Often shunned by Western tourists, Bishnupur, located 160 kilometers northwest of Kolkata, is nonetheless an important part of Bengal's history and well worth a visit of at least two days. The beauty of its terracotta temples is simply breathtaking, making this city a must-see in West Bengal. Unesco is considering the temples of Bishnupur as a World Heritage Site. Bishnupur's rickshaw bells are a curiosity. Comprising two metal mushrooms separated by a few centimetres, the rickshaw-wallah makes this strange invention ring by rapidly activating a small metal bar between the two mushrooms. Perhaps an ancestor of the classic doorbell!
