Located on the west bank of the Hooghly River, this peaceful town with its evocative name was one of India's five French trading posts. Although little remains of its colonial past, some will appreciate this getaway just 38 kilometers north, or an hour by train, of bustling Kolkata. The city, with a population of around 150,000, is now officially called Chandannagar. The origin of its name is still uncertain, and there are two versions. For some, it's the "city of sandalwood", chandan meaning sandalwood (a local tree renowned for its wood) in Bangla, and nagar being the translation of "city". The other, more poetic version states that chandan derives from chand, the moon. In other words, the "moon-city", so named because of its shape (a half-moon, in fact). A stroll along the strand is a good way to see this.
