population: 183,340. 24 km north of Kolkata. A Danish trading post from 1755 to 1845, Serampore was formerly known as Frederiksnagore. The town's emblematic monument is its Danish church, Saint Olaf de Serampore, which was completely and superbly restored in 2016. It is now reopened for worship under the aegis of the Anglican Church. In the Mahesh district, the 14th-century Jagannath temple is an important Hindu site. The city is also renowned for its Government College of Engineering & Textile Technology.
