According to legend, the capital of Madhya Pradesh is located on the spot chosen by Raja Bhoj in the 11th century to dig a lake(pal). Because of the Bhopal disaster (1984), tourists often overlook this city because of its negative and sad image. Such a shame! We recommend a stopover of at least 24 hours in Bhopal, a pleasant city with a population of 1.8 million that is also interesting from a tourist point of view. It's pleasant because the lakefront, that little inland sea, offers a clean, relaxing stopover. And you'll notice it as soon as you arrive: traffic isn't as heavy as in most other cities. It's interesting because it's a very culturally dynamic city, as evidenced by its museums. The Archaeological Museum is well-stocked, and the Anthropological Museum is simply fascinating. Finally, if the new town doesn't hold any particular interest, don't forget to stroll through the narrow streets of the picturesque old town, visit the great mosque and stroll through the lively markets.
