45 km from Sanchi. The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters site is home to a wealth of beautiful rock paintings dating back to 10,000 BC (Lascaux, for example, dates back to 15,000 BC), making it the oldest site of its kind in the country. Representations of animals, hunting scenes and dances can still be seen in caves or on rocks that once served as shelters for hunter-gatherers. This fascinating site has been a World Heritage Site since 2003. The guides are friendly, and it would be a pity to miss a few well-hidden drawings or not learn that these caves were also buried under the sea.
