In the heart of India, a hill dotted with stupas overlooks a small village called Sanchi. These bell-shaped monuments were erected between the 3rd century BC and the 12th century AD during the exceptional expansion of Buddhism in India. The site was forgotten after the 13th century until it was rediscovered by General Taylor (officer of the Empire) in 1818, half buried but nevertheless intact. Later, in 1912, Sir John Marshal, Director General of Archaeology, ordered restoration work on the site, which was recently classified as a World Heritage Site.
