A small village, Khajuraho is entirely devoted to tourism. Travellers of all nationalities come here to admire the erotic temples inherited from the Chandela empire. Built between the 10th and 12th centuries, they bear witness to a time when tantrism was elevated to the art of living. The sensual sculptures intertwine to form a senseless ballet of frescoes in which the sexuality of men sometimes mingles with that of animals. Inspired by the Kama Sutra, they constitute one of the greatest masterpieces of Indian art. In addition to the shamelessness of some of these sculptures, you'll be struck by the extraordinary finesse of their execution. You'll often be hailed by shopkeepers watching for tourists from their doorsteps. They'll be delighted to chat with you over a good chai, but keep in mind that they'll make sure you don't leave empty-handed.
