Bhuj was founded in the 9th century and remained the capital of the independent state of Kutch for a long time. Between 1510 and 1948, eighteen kings succeeded one another on the throne of the kingdom. Its people are proud, independent and nomadic to the core. In 1948, the state joined forces with India to avoid war. Its strategic position between India and Pakistan is the cause of frequent clashes in the desert. But what really marked Bhuj's history in recent years was the violent earthquake of 2001. The inhabitants are very attached to their land and haven't left it, despite the ever-present risk of the earth shaking again. Since then, Bhuj has been reborn and is showing a new face, with an urbanization plan, widened streets and new houses everywhere. The old town, surrounded by crenellated ramparts, has retained its medieval charm (palaces, bazaars, colorful temples, remains of the old fort).
