Built around a lake, this city of 450,000 inhabitants unfortunately suffered major damage in the 2001 earthquake. In the middle of the lake stands the statue of the city's founder, Jam Rajat Singh, on a horse. The temples dedicated to Krishna are interesting and well worth a visit. The city's temple to the monkey god Hanuman made it into the Book of Records: since August1 , 1964, priests have been taking turns day and night to chant the prayer shri ram, jai ram, jai ram.
