The city was once called Sudamapuri, after Sudama, a childhood friend of Krishna. It was a strategic point for trade with Africa and the Persian Gulf. It is also, and above all, the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the spiritual guide and leader of the country's independence movement. Two hours are enough to go around this charming little city, do not hesitate to stroll in the small streets... Several old houses can be admired in Manek Chowk, near the Kirti Mandir, where a statue of Gandhi is enthroned in the middle. The house where the Mahatma was born is the main interest of this small city.
