Located on the banks of the Tapti, Surat is one of the most important industrial cities of the country. In the 12th century, the Parsis settled there, then in the 16th century the Mughals used its prosperous port as a landing stage to Mecca. Then came the Portuguese, Dutch and French, who contributed to the development of the city. Finally, the British landed in 1614 and made Surat their first colony in India. Today, the city is famous for its textile factories and especially for its gold embroidered saris and diamond factories. Except for a castle and some mosques, it does not present any major interest for the traveler.
