Formerly known as Baroda, it is the former capital of the Gaekwar (or "protectors of the cows"), whose reign extended from the 18th century to independence. During official ceremonies, their monarch had the singular honor of being greeted by 21 cannon shots. Under the British Raj, each cannon shot took on a special significance: the viceroy decided how many were fired, in proportion to the prestige of the ruling maharaja. Vadodara is a pleasant town with parks and museums, renowned for its silver jewelers. One day is enough to discover it.
