It is India's sixth-largest city in terms of population, with around 5.5 million inhabitants. King Ahmed Shah founded the city in 1411. Once known as the "Manchester of the East" for its textile factories, the former state capital (1960-1970) remains Gujarat's most important city. Described by the Mughal emperor Jahangir as the "City of Dust", Ahmedabad has two faces. The old quarters with their Indo-Muslim architecture on the east bank of the Sabarmati River, and a modern complex with buildings designed by Le Corbusier, Louis Khan and Charles Correa on the west bank. The old-world charm of the old town and its mosques makes travellers forget the horrors of traffic. After the 2001 earthquake, the French government allocated 1 million euros to renovate the old town. In 2017, it joined the exclusive club of monuments listed as World Heritage Sites by Unesco. This recognition should enable Ahmedabad's "pols", the semi-independent districts of the old town, to regain their former splendor.
