Thirty-two kilometers from Bikaner, on the road to Jaisalmer, is the former hunting ground of the maharajas of Bikaner. Recreational hunting has been banned in India since 1972 and this reserve, like many others, has become a sanctuary for wild animals. The Gajner Nature Reserve is a break between the two main cities of the Thar, Bikaner and Jaisalmer. The park is mainly a refuge for antelopes, wild boars and many deer. The Gajner Palace, a hunting lodge built by Maharaja Ganga Singh and converted into a luxury hotel, offers guided tours open to non-residents.
