SALIM SINGH KI HAVELI

This haveli is one of the most famous in Jaisalmer because of its tarabiscot shape. The base is quite narrow, while the upper storey spills over the street. It was built in 1815 on the foundations of a 17th century haveli, which may explain its incongruous architecture. Commissioned by Prime Minister Salim Singh, the house was occupied by the Mehta family, one of the most influential in the city. If the base of the building is rather austere, the top floor is a masterpiece. The abundance of balconies and chhatri galleries supported by finely chiseled peacocks speaks volumes about the proud character of the owner. The whole is sculpted with great finesse. He would have had two additional floors built. But the king, angry with such a claim, would have destroyed them so that his palace remains the highest monument of the city. The two elephants guarding the entrance indicate the high rank of the master of the place. The interior seems much more modest, except for the top floor and the dance hall decorated with small mirrors. From the balconies, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the bazaar and the citadel of Jaisalmer. It's best to go there early in the morning to enjoy the beautiful light and sunshine from the ramparts. And to get a view from above and appreciate the whole shape of the building, climb on the terrace of the Garh Jaisal Hotel or Raj Mandir, both located inside the fort.
