In the 16th century, on the advice of a sadhu, King Udai Singh founded his new capital after being chased out of Chittogarh by the Mughal emperor Akbar. Nicknamed the Venice of India, Udaipur is famous for its Lake Pichola and its City Palace, the huge palace of the ranas built on the lake. Home to about 451,000 people, the city was the setting for Fritz Lang's German film The Bengal Tiger (1958) and the James Bond film Octopussy (1983). Many foreigners rightly want to discover this romantic city where you can stroll around on foot.
