Chittorgarh is the ultimate Rajput city. An extremely romantic city in and for which chivalry has fought many times. The fort is the most beautiful representation of it. Built from the 8th century, it was sacked in 1303 by Allaudin Khiliji to capture the beautiful Rani Padmi, then in 1535, by the Sultan of Gujarat. Each time the losses are enormous, but the rajpoute code of honor is applied and the women practice the jauhar, or collective suicide to escape the enemies. Today, this city of more than 120 000 inhabitants attracts Indian tourists, but few Westerners. For that, it would have to make efforts as regards hotel trade. Nevertheless, it is an unavoidable stage between Udaipur and Bundi, and can even be done in the day of transit.
