Quite restful, Pushkar is conducive to dreaming and meditation. Built around a sacred lake, it is a major pilgrimage site. The chanting throughout the day and night provides a spiritual atmosphere. For Hindus, a pilgrimage to Pushkar, the only place where Brahma has a temple, is worth a hundred others. This very small town lost in a beautiful setting of arid hills is also known for its camel fair held in October. Travel agencies from all over the world send herds of tourists to this town, which is quite exotic in this traditional Indian setting. Lovers of tranquility will avoid this period. The rest of the time, Pushkar is an ideal place to rest during a trip to Rajasthan. The main street, closed to traffic, is full of stores, restaurants and cheap, clean and friendly hotels, appreciated mainly by young travelers with little regard for comfort. Some may be annoyed by this summer camp atmosphere. Some tourists come here to succumb to illicit drugs in the company of sadhus who use them in their spiritual quest. A Hindu holy city, Pushkar is a 100% vegetarian city. It is impossible to get chicken or fish and it is even difficult to find eggs. You can still enjoy a cold beer in some restaurants for foreign tourists. It will be served in a teapot with a mug, so as not to shock anyone.
