Once the capital of a small Muslim principality, the small town of Fatehpur Shekhawati was liberated in the 18th century by Sardul Singh. Its fate was similar to that of neighboring towns. Today, with a population of 78,500, it resembles a ghost town. The deserted streets are lined with sumptuous havelis that reflect the village's past wealth. You may only be passing through, but if you can, stop off at the Nand Lal Devra haveli, the Chaudhari haveli, the Mahavir Prasad Goenka and the Harikrishan Das Sarogi. All feature well-preserved paintings. Don't miss Nadine Le Prince's haveli, one of the most beautiful in Shekhawati, where you can even stay.
