Founded in the 18th century, this ancient trading city is now Shekhawati's most popular tourist destination. It was the first to exploit its marvellous heritage, dubbing itself the "open-air art gallery" of Shekhawati. Mandawa boasts a number of spectacular havelis, most of them restored, a small palace, several temples, as well as numerous boutiques and a hotel offer that would make other Rajasthani towns pale in comparison. A victim of its own success, the town is gradually losing its authenticity. Its main street is tending to disappear behind billboards and advertising signs. On every street corner, you'll find touts looking for tourists to stroll through the city streets. Don't let these annoyances put you off - Mandawa is well worth a visit, as is Shekhawati.
