In Berber, ouar means "without" and zazate means "noise", so Ouarzazate would be the city without noise. A name not entirely appropriate for this town of around 70,000 inhabitants, often considered a crossroads for the roads of the South. Before entering the town, the Ecla and Oscar studios stand in succession, in the colors of Cleopatra. Ouarzazate is a cinephile. The pride of the people of the Ouarzazate region, they're happy to tell you about the films they've seen made close to home. Even if the film industry in the region is running out of steam today, the town has hosted many great films since the 1960s with Lawrence of Arabia. In 2014, the Game of Thrones teams also came to enjoy the setting. Ouarzazate, a sandy city at the gateway to the desert. Its wide avenues form the outlines of a lively center, where people come to haggle at night, stroll through the main Almowahidin square or the surrounding alleyways. The old town of Ouarzazate is just a few minutes away, with its cinema museum just around the corner. Opposite, the Taourirt kasbah has opened several of its rooms to visitors. This former kasbah of the Glaoui is of great architectural interest and one of the few in the region to be so well maintained. A typical historic district, it's easy to get lost in its shady lanes leading to pretty little squares. At the end of the zgags, corridors of earth and straw, a few warmly and tastefully decorated guest houses come into view. You're carried away by the south, the warmth of the landscape and the people. And Ouarzazate becomes much more than just a stopover.
