In M'Hamid, you reach the extreme limit of Moroccan civilization, the end of tarred roads, the end of electric and telephone lines. At 45 km from the Algerian border, this small village of about 7,000 inhabitants is authentic and alive. Here, the experience of the desert is only 10 km away, in the Lihoudi erg, or further, in the Chegaga erg, about 50 km away. It is worth noting that several tribes live in M'Hamid: the Bedouins, near the palm grove, the Berbers, at the exit of the city, and the Sahrawis. Here you will have your first contact with the Sahara, the largest desert in the world, which extends over an area of 8 million km², from the Red Sea to the Atlantic and from the Atlas Mountains to Sudan. If M'Hamid is close to the Sahara, it is not at the foot of the dunes as in Merzouga, and it is more reasonable to go through a guide to go into the desert. CTM buses serve M'Hamid (spelled Lamhamide Ghozlane) to the following cities: Ouarzazate, Zagora, Marrakech. From the central square of M'Hamid, you will find cabs and local buses that go to Zagora and other cities around. The varied and colorful souks are held every Monday. The souk of M'Hamid is also an important center of the camel trade. Without equaling Merzouga and its fifty or so hostels, M'Hamid is not lacking in possible accommodations. Even if many projects exist, the village is still spared by the mass tourism industry. Let's hope it lasts!
