Imilchil, situated at an altitude of 2,200 meters, is made up of some twenty Berber villages whose mud-brick houses abut the Assif Mellou river. This hamlet, lost in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains, is famous for the moussem des fiancées, which takes place at the end of September in the neighboring village of Aït Hddidou Ameur. Young girls and boys from the region come here to celebrate their engagement. The village is packed with locals and tourists. Music blares, a perpetual hubbub and the smell of livestock and Berber food set the backdrop for one of Morocco's most famous moussems.
