Its continental Saharan climate is characterized by large temperature swings between day and night. Rain is rare, but when it falls, it causes a lot of damage. It can happen 6 or 8 years without the sky opening its floodgates on Smara. With a population of about 60,000 inhabitants, Smara is home to craftsmen, shopkeepers, civil servants, farmers and stockbreeders. The town is mentioned in French literature, including Michel Vieuchange's travel diaries and J.M.G. Le Clézio's novel Désert. It is not easy to find a place to stay, but a few basic hotels can help you out.
