Occupied by the British at the end of the 19th century , it was named Villa Bens under the Spanish protectorate which ended in 1958. Tarfaya, on Cape Juby, is like its geographical location: away from everything, out of time. But its strategic position in the Sahara led to its designation by Hassan II, as a gathering place for the 350,000 demonstrators of the Green March, organized in 1975. In terms of Moroccan history, it symbolizes the heroic resistance of the southern populations to European invasions during the 19th century . It also marks the beginning of aviation via the first airline company that was born in Europe thanks to the Toulouse company whose founder is Pierre-Georges Latécoère. The history of airmail was thus born in Tafraya. This town of 7,000 inhabitants is a small fishing port (sardines, squid, sole, etc.) of great tranquility. It is inhabited by soldiers, sedentary nomads and descendants of Spanish settlers mysteriously attached to this city of another world. Here, Spanish predominates over French, which few people speak. By bus, the cities of Layaâoune, Dakhla, Agadir, Marrakech and Casablanca are served every day by the companies Supratours and CTM. You will also find large cabs that connect the important localities of the region. On the restaurant side, several cafés-restaurants offer good fish tajines.
