El Jadida (population 214,000) is one of a series of coastal towns still reflecting the Portuguese imprint, and is a veritable jewel of military architecture. This city, whose industrial and economic importance was long held back by Casablanca, seems to be regaining some color thanks to the extremely polluting Jorf Lasfar industrial complex, which encourages tourists to go swimming just a few kilometers from the city. Nevertheless, El Jadida retains its superb pale yellow ramparts, built on the seafront. You can contemplate the bastions from all angles from the covered walkway, as if you were walking around a sculpture, successively revealing its facets, its play of perspective and its unevenness. From the semi-circular Porta del Mar, the Portuguese left for Brazil. In the small medina, the narrow streets around squares are sometimes deserted, or animated by the passing of a cat or children playing soccer. If you fall under the spell, bed & breakfasts in the medina allow you to soak up even more of the tranquil atmosphere. The alley adjacent to the main entrance is lined with small craft and souvenir shops. Take the time to chat with the vendors, who will tell you all about the history of the city they love. The Portuguese cistern is a must-see. The rest is very pleasant, making El Jadida a very pleasant stop along the Atlantic coast. The summer moussem attracts thousands of visitors.
