Formerly known as Fedala, Mohammedia was one of West Africa's biggest oil ports in the 1950s. Several processing plants and a refinery are located here. Only half an hour by freeway from the economic capital, Mohammedia is part of "Greater Casablanca". Morocco's second-largest port complex, the town attracts visitors eager for seaside pleasures and water sports. Its seafront promenade, dating back to the 1930s, has recently been redeveloped to offer a more pleasant setting. The beautiful 3 km-long beach offers a wide range of leisure activities. There's golf, horse riding, pigeon shooting, fishing, surfing and sailing at the nautical base. The town's pretty flower park has earned it the nickname "seaside city of flowers, sports and wind" Today, new housing developments are springing up in Mohammedia, somewhat distorting its quiet seaside neighborhoods... But easily accessible by train from Casa and Rabat, it remains a city where people come for fresh air! Mohammedia is mainly known for its beaches, of which Mannesman, Monica, La Siesta and Les Sablettes are among the most famous. Waves can be violent, so be careful. The Samir refinery and the Mohammed VI Foundation are financing major initiatives to make the beaches cleaner. A promenade, golf course and marina surround the downtown beach complex.
