The foundation of this seaside town would go back to the IXth century, but one only starts to speak about Al Hoceima in 1920 when the Spanish general Sanjuro settles there. In 1956, the city gained its independence from Spain and became Moroccan. At that time, the authorities decided to establish a Mediterranean tourism by promoting its bay and its beaches. In 2004, a terrible earthquake affected the region, but the city, rebuilt, now boasts a more dashing appearance. It has a very pleasant bay, bordered by the rif, but it is far from having acquired the level of development and comfort that people wanted to attribute to it.
