A 230 km drive southeast of Tangier, Chefchaouen, or "Chaouen" to its friends, nestles at an altitude of 600 m in the glorious foothills of the Rif mountains. This large, picturesque, magnetic and mysterious village, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to one of Morocco's most charming medinas, renowned for its cerulean architecture, with houses and shops in a multitude of bluish hues. As you round a bend in the road, you can't help but take a photo of the pretty doors of the houses covered in the famous blue pigment found at the market, a delight for watercolorists. In its many stores, you'll find quality local crafts, woollen garments, woven blankets and rugs at reasonable prices. Chefchaouen is also famous for its local goat's cheese. Located on the Place de Outa El-Hamman, the impressive Kasbah, an ochre vestige of a bygone era, is an invitation to let the hours fly by.
