Seat of the sub-prefecture and capital of the French side, it's undoubtedly the busiest place for shopping and daily entertainment. The origin of its name comes from the numerous marshes (known as marigots) that once existed here. It became the island's capital during the sugar era. Fort Saint-Louis was built during the reign of Louis XVI. From then on, the town was divided into several districts, including Bellevue, Saint-James and Saint-Jean. Marigot attracts visitors with its colorful market and lolos on the square. Its marina and port are ideal for island hopping. The town is well known for its shopping, but the Dutch side has become much more developed in recent years.
