Tuzla/Тузла (pronounced "touzla") has a population of about 80,000, of which 73 percent are Bosniaks and 14 percent are Bosnian Croats. It is the capital of Tuzla municipality (population 110,000) and Tuzla canton (population 430,000), in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Connections: see bus station and airport. This city of the "salt mine"(tuzla in Turkish) does not lack flavor. A large working-class city, very lively and sometimes agitated, it has a beautiful Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman style center, but also a spirit of tolerance inherited from socialist Yugoslavia. Little affected by the last war, it has suffered from the privatization of its factories and the collapse of its salt mines dug since antiquity. Although its municipality of 110,000 inhabitants is the third largest in the country, Tuzla has a suburb of 250,000 inhabitants which is the second largest urban center in Bosnia-Herzegovina, ahead of Banja Luka. It also has an international airport with, for example, regular flights to Basel-Mulhouse.
