From the 11th century until the Revolution, Bretteville-sur-Odon was part of the numerous dependencies of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. On the edge of the small Odon, the domain of the Barony was used to welcome the poorest, the needy, the pilgrims, but also the lords, dukes, monks or archbishops passing through. The Duchess Gonnor, wife of the Duke of Normandy Richard I (and therefore great-grandmother of William the Conqueror), donated the Barony to the abbey in 1015. Today, in this neighboring township west of Caen, the monks' dwelling and the beautiful 14th century monastic barn of this ancient state organization remain.
