Foča/Фоча (pronounced "fot-cha") has a population of about 12,000, of which 79% are Bosnian-Serbs and 20% are Bosniaks. It is the capital of the municipality of Foča (population 18,000), in the Bosnian Serb Republic. The city is located 24 km northwest of Montenegro (border crossing Hum-Šćepan Polje), 32 km southwest of Goražde, 72 km southeast of Sarajevo, 133 km northeast of Trebinje and 194 km south of Tuzla(via Sarajevo). Bus connections: see bus station.A charmless, war-scarred city, Foča nevertheless enjoys a prime location: built on the Drina and its tributary the Čehotina (125 km long), it is dominated by the highest peaks in the country, including the highest point, Mount Maglić (2,388 m above sea level), located 30 km to the south, on the Montenegrin border. Home to part of the primary forest of the Sutjeska National Park, Foča has especially become the rear base for Bosnian agencies offering rafting trips from Montenegro in the grandiose Tara Canyon. A few hours are enough to discover the town itself, which is not particularly welcoming by the way. If you are here for the rafting, prefer to sleep in Hum, base of departure and arrival of the excursions on the Tara. This hamlet, very festive in summer, is also the only border post of the surroundings for Montenegro. As such, the region benefits from important European investments in infrastructure, as it is an essential crossing point between Sarajevo and Podgorica.
