The Tara River canyon (Kanjon Rijeke Tare/Кањон Реке Таре) extends 82 km in length from Montenegro before joining the Piva to form the Drina in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At this confluence, the hamlets of Hum/Хум (municipality of Foča) and Šćepan Polje (Montenegro) face each other. These house the arrival bases for rafting trips and a border crossing. Hum (pronounced "choum") has about 15 inhabitants and is 24 km southeast of Foča and 73 km northwest of Žabljak (Montenegro). Bosnian rafting agencies shuttle between Žabljak, Hum and Foča during the whole season (May-October).If you are a lover of beautiful landscapes, but not of thrills, you may still let yourself be taken on a raft for a trip on the Tara. And for good reason, the Tara Gorge is the "European Colorado": the second deepest canyon in the world. Reaching 1,300 m above the water, the walls enclose the river, sometimes almost sheer. Nature is everywhere, wild. This pure Montenegrin jewel remains almost unknown. However, the canyon is part of the Durmitor National Park, which was one of the first natural sites listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Only those who are fond of rafting and thrills will be a bit picky. Because the Tara is relatively quiet here, especially in summer when the waters calm down. This leaves the small families and the big chilled ones the leisure to enjoy the show.
